Chapter Sixteen

During the night, I think I murdered about ten different attackers and woke up trashed. Cheer practice didn’t stand a chance today. I couldn’t do anything right. Coach pulled me aside at the end of the disastrous four hours and asked me if she could help.

“No, no, it’s nothing,” I lied. “It won’t happen again.”

“Okay, but if you need to talk, Michele, I’m here.”

“Thanks Coach,” I said, slipping through the open gym doors and into the parking lot, walking up to John’s waiting car and wondering what he had in store for me today.

We ate an early lunch and went shopping in Destin.

Of course, it couldn’t be a peaceful time trying on clothes and shoes. After only twenty minutes, I felt the tell-tale signs of an ambush. My skin prickled at a discordant hum and a few light shuffles, along with hesitant, uneven steps, still far away, but close enough, caught my attention. Small clothing stores rarely had bathrooms, but back doors were common.

Bursting out into the bright sunlight, I had to stop and let my eyes adjust before steamrolling my way down the alley. Once at the edge of the building, I used my trusty mirror to check around the corner to see if anyone waited for me.

Several people milled about, and I watched as a tall, well-built man entered the store. The hair on my neck stood straight up and the familiar chill settled on the back of my neck. I spotted the large black SUV, whose hum had first alerted me to his presence. I quickly checked the cash in my backpack and found thirty dollars. John must have felt generous today. I cruised across the street, angling my way to avoid detection by the man sitting in the driver’s seat in the SUV, and ran into a hotel. Going out a back entrance, I pulled up the map of the area in my mind and went through a couple other buildings, pausing only to call a taxi. I told him to meet me outside the building I intended to be in front of in ten minutes.

When I got there, I looked out the window of the store and noticed my cab hadn’t arrived. I browsed through the shop, looking out the window every few seconds. Fifteen minutes had passed. Too long. Where was it? Just when I was about to head back to the house another way, a yellow taxi drove up. I dashed outside and jumped in.

I gave the driver an address about one mile from my house and sat back to enjoy the ride. Ten minutes later, we stopped in front of that house, and I realized I’d never alerted John to my position. I pulled the phone out, punching the button for John. After the last fiasco, John had given me a new emergency phone, and I only had to push the button to alert him. I paid the driver and walked in the direction of my house, looking for places to hide if I needed to.
